New Requirements Under Seattle Labor Ordinances

By /

The City of Seattle has approved a comprehensive set of amendments, the 2015 Wage Theft Prevention and Labor Standards Harmonization Ordinance to Seattle’s labor standards laws.  While effective as of April 1, 2016, many of these new requirements are in “soft launch”, that is, there will be no enforcement or penalty until September 1, 2016.

Some of the more expansive requirements, which are currently in “soft launch” include:

Display of a specific Office of Labor Standards poster that includes notice to employees of rights in four spheres:

* Minimum Wage
* Wage Theft
* Fair Chance Employment
* Paid Sick & Safe Time

The poster must be posted in a conspicuous and accessible location and should be in the primary language of the employees.  Downloads of the poster are available at http://www.seattle.gov/Documents/Departments/LaborStandards/OLS-2016-Poster-11×17-color.pdf

Adopting and providing a full written Paid Sick and Safe Time Policy, provided to employees.

Providing written notice to employees of Wage Theft information

There are other changes in counting employees for Sick & Safe Time purposes, record keeping, definitions, granting of Sick & Safe time, and many others

All of these changes will be discussed in full at the Employment Breakfast scheduled for June 2, 2016.  RSVP to soundcounsel@helsell.com
